    Fossils

    Fossil thrips

These photos show inclusions of thrips in amber and copal. Depending of their origin, these fossil resins, and thus the included thrips, are up to 120 millions of years old. Pictures of amber inclusions in these quality require experience and patience. The main problem are reflections and distortions. All pictures have been created in focus stacking technique by combining numerous shots in different focus distances. Illumination involved merging transmission light with up to five white-light-LED incident illuminators. Different diffusors were used for incident illumination to prevent reflections; different coloured paper sheets were inserted under the samples with transmission light to get the inclusion in better contrast to the yellowish translucent amber.
A large variety of pictures of many – also fossil – specific species is available under species.
