Biology and distribution
Described from Namibia (P. schultzei, F. favoniana), Japan (E. gossypii), Australia (P. nigripes, F. trybomi, F. nigra, F. lycopersici, F. kellyana, F. aeschyli), Java, Indonesia (F. tabacicola), Sri Lanka (F. sulphurea), Thailand (F. persetosa), New Guinea (F. pembertoni, F. clitoriae), Brazil (F. paucispinosa), Egypt (F. nana, F. dampfi), Haiti (F. ipomoeae), Uganda (F. interocellaris), Kenya (F. delicatula), England (F. anglicana), Ghana (F. africana) and China (Frankliniella hainanensis).
Distribution: Frankliniella schultzei is a flower-living species which probably originates from South America or Africa. Today it is pantropically widespread. It has been repeatedly introduced into temperate regions, where it is found in greenhouses. It occurs in a light and a dark form. The dark form is little known from Europe, but has been reported at least from the Netherlands and from Germany (Ulitzka unpublished). Frankliniella schultzei causes damage to various crops worldwide, both by feeding and – with regard to the dark form – by transmitting Tospoviruses.
