    Wings

Fringed wings in insects –  a homologous adaptation to a small body size

Small sized insects use viscous forces for their flight. As an adaptation they often have conspicuously shaped wings with fringes or similar structures. For more information on that flight technique click on flight.

These gallery presents »fringe wings« from various insect orders and other types of peculiar wing forms (including fossils).
