extant species
Phlaeothrips bispinoides
Biology and distribution
Described from Switzerland from Fagus.
Distribution: Phlaeothrips bispinoides is rarely collected. It has been reported from Austria (Tyrol), Croatia, Slovenia, Switzerland (Canton Zurich) and the Czech Republic (former Moravia and Bohemia); in Germany, P. bispinoides has been found in Baden-Württemberg, Schleswig-Holstein and Hesse. In the latter location (in the Solling) it has been collected in high abundance using tree photoeclectors on beech trunks (Ulitzka 1999).
This thrips lives on dead wood and very probably feeds by sucking on fungal hyphae.
