extant species
Phlaeothrips pillichianus
Biology and distribution
Described from Simontornya, Hungary; sieved from moss and oak bark.
Distribution: Central and Eastern Europe, however, local and rare. Reported from Hungary, Bulgaria (Ulitzka unpublished), Germany, Italy, Romania, Slovenia, Serbia and the Czech Republic (former Moravia). In Germany, P. pillichianus has only been recorded at five locations (Ahrschleife nature reserve near Altenahr; Sachsenwald, east of Hamburg; Gravenbruch, south of Frankfurt a. M.; Marburg a.d. Lahn and Holzhausen, Wachsenburg, Thuringia).
Phlaeothrips pillichianus is breeding on dead branches and presumably feeding on the hyphae of unidentified fungi.
